Baby Dedication

Baby Dedication

Psalm 127:3-5 Children are a gift from the LORD; they are a reward from him. 4 Children born to a young man are like arrows in a warrior's hands. 5 How joyful is the man whose quiver is full of them! He will not be put to shame when he confronts his accusers at the city gates. (NLT)

What is Baby or Child Dedication?

Baby dedication is a scriptural practice. When Jesus was born, his parents dedicated him to the Lord according to the Law and custom of that day (Luke 2:22-23; Leviticus 12:1-4). Additionally, we read in Scripture that people brought their children to Jesus so that he could pray and bless them (Matthew 19:13-14).

How is a Baby or Child Dedicated?

When a baby is born or if a child has never been dedicated to God, it is befitting to ask the Lord to bless the baby/child. During this time the Pastor will lay his hand on the baby or child and pray God's blessing upon his/her life. Parents are included in this blessing by acknowledging that the child belongs to God and that they will bring the child up in the ways of the Lord. The Pastor will anoint the head of the child and his/her parents with blessed oil. A certificate of dedication will be presented to the parents.

Who can we invite to the dedication service?

The dedication service is a sacred and special time. Some people include family, friends, and God-parents of the child. Usually, if the God-parents are present, the Pastor will anoint them and pray God's blessing over them and their role in caring for the child.

When?

Baby/Child Dedications can be requested at any time by notifying the pastor or leaders of the church. The dedication service is held during the regular Sunday worship service.
